The Columbia Land Conservancy (CLC), in Chatham, NY, seeks a Communications Manager who will work to further the organization?s mission as it relates to outreach and communications. The primary role of this position is to implement programs and initiatives designed to increase CLC?s public visibility and the public?s understanding and support of CLC?s mission. Working as part of CLC?s Development/Outreach team, the Communications Manager will develop and produce outreach and interpretive materials for distribution in print, online and through traditional and social media outlets. This position is also responsible for in-house management of CLC?s website.
Applicants should have a bachelor?s degree in communications, graphic design or environmental science, natural resource science, or other applicable field; advanced degree a plus; 3-5 years prior communications and/or design work preferred. The ideal candidate will have outstanding written, graphic, marketing, and verbal skills with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and independently as well as a commitment to and basic understanding of CLC?s mission.

Reports to Director of Development and Outreach
Essential Functions
- Implement programs and initiatives designed to increase CLC?s public visibility and the public?s understanding and support of CLC?s mission.? Identify target audiences, strategies and funding sources.
- Assist with the creation of a marketing plan consistent with the strategic priorities of the board. Working under the direction of the Executive Director and Director of Development and Outreach, identify priority constituencies and goals and then develop a plan to implement the strategies identified to reach those goals.? Create and implement the online marketing strategy, including CLC?s website, social media, and email marketing.
- Draft and produce CLC?s newsletters (published three times per year) and the annual report.
- Draft press releases and feature articles to assist with outreach goals.
- Coordinate the production and distribution of CLC publications and outreach material (newsletters, annual reports, brochures and other materials such as display boards and posters); ensure consistency of message, designs, programs, etc.
- Develop displays and interpretive signage for CLC?s public conservation areas.? Create and assist with design and production of PCA trail brochures, flyers, and other outreach materials.
- Assist with updates to CLC?s web page and maintaining a strong online presence through social media outlets.? Work with appropriate staff to develop online content as necessary.
- Create CLC presentations, video, and slide shows
- Ensure that CLC has appropriate photographs for all publication and outreach efforts. Serve as CLC?s staff photographer. Work with volunteers to develop a ?photo-volunteer? team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor?s degree in communications, graphic design or environmental science, natural resource science, or other applicable field; advanced degree a plus.? Prior experience and training may be substituted, if applicable.
- 3-5 years prior communications and/or design work preferred.
- Working knowledge of PHP and word press a plus
- A commitment to and basic understanding of CLC?s mission
- Must have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively and independently.
- Must have outstanding written, graphic, marketing, and verbal skills.
- Must be able to juggle and prioritize a variety of tasks and projects simultaneously and work with diversity of people including volunteers and outside consultants, contractors and vendors.
- Willingness to work beyond conventional office hours as required.
Physical Demands
Normal office duties as performed at a desk (may require long periods of sitting and computer typing). Ability to carry equipment up to 20lbs. Outdoor work generally involves visits to properties and the ability to walk on properties that may or may not have developed trail systems and occasionally consist of steep terrain.? Driving to sites requires use of personal vehicle.
Work Environment
Approximately 90% indoor office work and 10% outdoors.? Office work is primarily sitting at a desk with a computer or in meetings.? Most travel is within the county with occasional travel within the region and beyond for meetings, conferences, and trainings.
