The NASA rover Curiosity beamed to Earth his new song "Reach for the Stars" on Tuesday in the first music broadcast from another planet, to the delight of students who gathered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to listen.

The song had been uploaded to the rover, which landed near the equator of Mars, and played back ? a journey of some 700 million miles.

The musician, who promotes science and mathematics education, was among more than a dozen celebrities who were invited to JPL to watch Curiosity's landing earlier this month. Others included Wil Wheaton, Seth Green and Morgan Freeman.

In 2008, NASA beamed the Beatles' "Across the Universe" into the cosmos to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the song.

Long-term methadone treatment can cause changes in the brain, according to recent studies from the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. The results show that treatment may affect the nerve cells in the brain. The studies follow on from previous studies where methadone was seen to affect cognitive functioning, such as learning and memory.

Since it is difficult to perform controlled studies of methadone patients and unethical to attempt in healthy volunteers, rats were used in the studies. Previous research has shown that methadone can affect cognitive functioning in both humans and experimental animals.

Sharp decrease in key signaling molecule

Rats were given a daily dose of methadone for three weeks. Once treatment was completed, brain areas which are central for learning and memory were removed and examined for possible neurobiological changes or damage.

In one study, on the day after the last exposure to methadone, there was a significant reduction (around 70 per cent) in the level of a signal molecule which is important in learning and memory, in both the hippocampus and in the frontal area of the brain. This reduction supports findings from a previous study (Andersen et al., 2011) where impaired attention in rats was found at the same time. At this time, methadone is no longer present in the brain. This indicates that methadone can lead to cellular changes that affect cognitive functioning after the drug has left the body, which may be cause for concern.

No effect on cell generation

The second study, a joint project with Southwestern University in Texas, investigated whether methadone affects the formation of nerve cells in the hippocampus. Previous research has shown that new nerve cells are generated in the hippocampus in both adult humans and rats, and that this formation is probably important for learning and memory. Furthermore, it has been shown that other opiates such as morphine and heroin can inhibit this formation. It was therefore reasonable to assume that methadone, which is also an opiate, would have the same effect.

However, the researchers did not find any change in the generation of new nerve cells after long-term methadone treatment. If the same is true in humans, this is probably more positive for methadone patients than continuing with heroin. However, the researchers do not know what effect methadone has on nerve cells that have previously been exposed to heroin.

Large gaps in knowledge

Since the mid-1960s, methadone has been used to treat heroin addiction. This is considered to be a successful treatment but, despite extensive and prolonged use, little is known about possible side effects. There are large knowledge gaps in this field.

Our studies show that prolonged methadone treatment can affect the nerve cells, and thus behaviour, but the results are not always as expected. Many more pre-clinical and clinical studies are needed to understand methadone's effect on the brain, how this can result in altered cognitive function, and, if so, how long these changes last. Knowledge of this is important - both for the individual methadone patient and the outcome of treatment.

How to Stay Healthy and Disease Free?

We are supposed to live long, healthy, happy, and productive lives.?We have the power to be disease free.? It?s called PREVENTION ? mental, emotional, and physical ? in which your mind, body and spirit are all playing together in harmony and energy flows smoothly throughout your entire body.

I get somewhat irritated when I see news and articles about ?fighting cancer? or ?the war on cancer.?? There?s a much better way to think about ridding oneself from cancer or any adverse health condition.? We need to shift our focus and think, talk, preach ? whatever word suits you ? HEALTH, HEALTH AND MORE HEALTH!

Cancer doesn?t happen without reason. All disease is a symptom of our body being out of harmony, out of ease (look at the meaning word ?disease?, even the word points you into the right direction).

I know this is a very controversial subject, but I want to give you some real life examples, including my own, to de-taboo the subject. Some people think, it?s disrespectful to talk about such serious disease as cancer this way, well, let me tell you my story and you can draw your own conclusions.

I Was Diagnosed With Lymphoma in 2001

In 2001, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. I?m sure you know what that is. Yeah, it?s a very ?nasty? type of cancer. I certainly wasn?t ready for such news as I was getting ready to conquer the world ? not to be at the hospital for months.

I started asking I would think usual questions people ask in such moments: Is that it? Is there all there is to life? Was my purpose to come and go so quickly?

I went to the doctor and he, with a very gloomy expression, announced that I should reserve six months out of my calendar as I was going to go through a heavy ordeal of chemo and such.

I asked what about my hair? (Somehow it seemed important to me at the time.) He answered, ?well, what about it, it will fall off.? :(

I got so upset, I went outside crying. But, the doctor?s diagnosis didn?t feel right, so I knew I was ok. I simply refused to hear him telling me I was sick as I felt it my core ? I had this strong emotion ? that I was OK. I had read about cancer and disease and I knew that disease was nothing else but the body out of ease.? I also knew that we all have cancer cells within our system and that when energy of any negativity accumulates and is not released, then the energetic imbalance can cause cancer to form.? See:

I Pictured Myself as Healthy and Vibrant

Doctors had found a tumor in my throat.? So OK, something was there. But, I decided not to call it cancer. I pictured and created the feeling of myself as healthy, vibrant, energetic person. I also saw my body as a sea of cells where energy floats smoothly.? As I did that over and over again, each day with more and more conviction, a knowing occurred: I knew that the cancer was gone and I was healthy.

Of course, big mouth that I was, I shared this with oncologist and he just kept on telling me how sick I was and that there was no way I was OK.

My parents decided to call in bioenergotherapist who could sense the energy field of the body.? He checked me and was flabbergasted why docs would claim I was sick.

Nevertheless, the doctors wanted to operate and remove the tumor from my throat. I thought OK ? sometimes you need to remove a tooth or your tonsils, so let?s do it.

After My Operation, Doctors Confirmed What I Already Knew

While I was being operated under local anesthesia a group of doctors came into the operating room with some trainees. They started talking as if I wasn?t even there, and made comments such as: ?oh such a pretty girl, so young what a shame; it?s helpless.?

I was stunned ? literally. If I could have, I would have screamed and said what do you think your negative comments do for a person?s confidence?

Have you ever read the amazing book ?Anatomy of Illness? by Norman Cousins in which he explains the importance of cooperation between doctor and patient and how crucial the doctor?s reassurance and belief that the patient will be healed is?

Similarly, Dr. Jill Bolte?Taylor, in her outstanding book ?Insights of the Stroke,? stressed the importance of belief in treating patients and the incredible role feelings of love and compassion play in recovery.

My doctors, failing to recognize the connection between the body and the mind, neglected to do any of important things suggested above. ?If it wasn?t for my strong belief and the absolute belief of my parents, I don?t dare to think what could have happened.

My doctors had planned for me to go through chemo and such procedures shortly after removing the tumor. I vividly remember my parents receiving a phone call from one of the head doctors on the day before Christmas. The doctor said that he was absolutely embarrassed to admit that no cancer cells were found in the tumor.?? He was in awe as things like this just didn?t happen, admitting that it had been nearly 35 years since such an error had occurred.

Our Thoughts and Beliefs Determine Our Outcomes

Knowing what I know now, all results and outcomes are possible, and the determining factor to achieve an outcome is our belief system.? Science has confirms that there is a field of energy, the field of all possibilities, that is influenced by our thoughts and beliefs. How you focus your thoughts is not only crucial, it is the most important factor. If for a second I believed that I was sick, I would not have been able to heal myself.? That?s for sure

If we live our life from a place of love, gratitude and appreciation as opposed to fear, bitterness, and dissatisfaction, then diseases simply won?t appear in our body.

I know that for those of you, this notion is hard to swallow. So, let me give you some more examples.

Now, do you see how crucial it is to eliminate EGO from the equation? In such cases there is no room for doubt, no room for judgment ? only pure, loving energy coming from the heart.

But, I can understand that some people might believe that it is a fake. The only reason why the mind would ever doubt or question such results is simply because we were conditioned to believe certain things ? especially in our western culture where left brain hemisphere thinking dominates our lives.

What mind doesn?t believe, the mind won?t conceive. So, let?s look at yet another case if you need more proof to cement your belief that such things are not only possible, but they could be the norm if we all embraced this technology.

Some have already awakened to combine Western medicine with Eastern medicine and the knowledge of the mind-body connection to achieve incredible results.

Prevention for the Physical Body

Prevention in all aspects is the key to staying healthy and cancer free. Let?s start with something basic: proper nutrition. Nutrition is a challenge in a world where food is filled with preservatives, fillers, and other harmful ingredients.? But, by making smart choices, we can avoid health challenges.

First off, start thinking consciously about what you put in your mouth. When you go to the store, do not buy anything that has ingredients with names that sound like something out of this world ? the closer to nature the better. Also, use your common sense. Our thoughts are our guiding systems, but they need energy to fuel them with life. Without that energy they just exist in that quantum soup of all possibilities.

There are 2 basic emotions that can enliven our thoughts: LOVE and FEAR. Most of the time, it is the emotion of FEAR that drives us. (Our media doesn?t help, instilling fear over and over again.)? In the ?Emotions? column, write down whether it is LOVE or FEAR that is the motivation for the desire.

When you combine a thought and emotion you get a feeling.? For example, when you combine the thought ?I wish I was healthier? with the emotion of FEAR what feelings do you feel?

Anxious? Sadness? Anger?

Write down whatever comes to mind in the ?Feelings? column after combining the thought and emotion.

Knowing that you need to become one with the vibration of your desire/intention, that your feelings are being mirrored by the field and manifested in your life, having feelings such as above HOW CAN YOU MANIFEST BETTER HEALTH? Does it make sense?

(AP) ? Even before Wisconsin sent Paul Ryan to Congress, he was meticulously carving a path that seemed to point only upward.

As a young Capitol Hill staffer, he impressed Republican lawmakers with his hustle and intellectual curiosity. He blended quickly with an elite crop of conservative thinkers. By his 30s, he was a congressman on his way to becoming a GOP name brand with his push-the-edge budget proposals.

Ryan's climb reached new heights Saturday when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced him as his running mate.

"Mitt's Choice for VP is Paul Ryan," said a phone app Romney's team created to spread the word to supporters.

As the chairman of the House Budget Committee, Ryan gives Romney a link to Capitol Hill leadership and underscores Romney's effort to make the election a referendum on the nation's economic course. Romney also could see his standing improve in Wisconsin, a state President Barack Obama won handily four years ago but that could be much tighter this November.

Even so, Ryan has been a double-edged sword for Romney. The congressman's endorsement of Romney came at a critical stage of the GOP primaries, giving him a boost in the Wisconsin race that effectively buried Romney's final threat. But it also meant Romney was embracing the Ryan-sponsored budget proposal that Democrats fiercely target as painful to the poor and elderly.

Still, the square-jawed congressman is viewed as a bridge between the buttoned-up GOP establishment and the riled-up tea party movement.

At 42, Ryan has spent almost half of his life in the Washington fold, the last 14 representing a southern Wisconsin district that runs from the shores of Lake Michigan through farm country south of Madison.

Ryan grew up in Janesville and still lives just down the block from where he spent his boyhood. During summers in college, Ryan was a salesman for Oscar Mayer and once drove the company's famed Wienermobile.

Ryan's father, a lawyer, died of a heart attack when Ryan was a teenager. It's why Ryan is a fitness buff, leading fellow lawmakers through grueling, early-morning workouts and pushing himself through mountain climbs.

That same intensity propelled him on the political front, too.

He was first exposed to Congress as a summer intern to former Sen. Robert Kasten, R-Wis. With an economics degree in hand, Ryan worked his way through committee staff assignments, a prominent think tank and top legislative advisory roles until opportunity arose with an open seat from his home turf. He leveraged Washington connections, local ties forged through the family construction business and the backing of anti-abortion groups en route to his surprisingly comfortable victory.

As a 28-year-old, Ryan entered Congress brimming with idealistic views about forcing government to become leaner and less intrusive, principles he thought even fellow Republicans were abandoning too readily.

"One of the first lessons I learned was, even if you come to Congress believing in limited government and fiscal prudence once you get here you are bombarded with pressure to violate your conscience and your commitment to help secure the people's natural right to equal opportunity," Ryan wrote in a 2010 book.

Critics question Ryan's own consistency. They note that he backed a costly prescription drug benefit during Republican George W. Bush's presidency that added strain to the Medicare budget, which Ryan touted at the time as "one of the most critical pieces of legislation" enacted since he joined Congress. He said in a June interview with The Associated Press that he took a "defensive" vote to ward off a more expensive Senate version. More recently, Ryan served on a bipartisan presidential debt commission but balked at its report because a tax increase was on the menu of options.

He is a disciple of and past aide to the late Rep. Jack Kemp, once a GOP vice presidential nominee himself who effusively promoted tax cuts as a central tenet for economic growth.

From the title page of his idyllic "Path to Prosperity" budget plan down to the most scrutinized fine print, Ryan is adept at framing proposals in the most pleasant terms.

Ryan's opponents charge that his call to open Medicare to more private competition is too risky even if implementation would be a ways off; he counters that the latest version was fashioned in consultation with prominent Democrats in hopes of heading off an all-out program collapse that would devastate the financial security of future retirees. Foes say his plans to scale back food stamps and housing assistance are mean-spirited; Ryan describes the moves, which would allow states to further customize their welfare programs while imposing tougher time limits and work requirements, as empowerment for the downtrodden who he argues are being lulled into lives of complacency and dependency.

It took time for Ryan's own party to get fully behind his ideas. A few years ago, when Ryan first proposed dramatic changes to entitlement programs like Medicare some in the GOP were skittish because Democrats pounced on the plans as undermining the health program accessed by millions of retirees.

Kasten said Ryan's refusal to back down paid off politically.

"If all the sudden you become the dartboard for everyone on the left and you are willing to stand there and take the heat and the darts, you develop a tremendous amount of respect even from those who are throwing the darts," Kasten said. "In the beginning it's a grudging respect. It grows into a true respect."

Ryan has let opportunities to advance come and go, most recently when he opted not to seek an open U.S. Senate seat. His young family factored into his considerations; he and wife, tax attorney Janna, have a daughter and two sons, ages 10, 8 and 7.

LifeProof iPhone 4/4S Case

The iPhone 4 and 4S feature stunning, all-glass designs, but they're not exactly the most durable smartphones out there. Even most adventure-averse owners can probably be found sporting a case to protect their glass-clad smartphones. The LifeProof iPhone 4/4S Case ($79.99 direct) , as its name suggests, is built to withstand whatever life throws at you. Unlike other ruggedized case options out there, the LifeProof is surprisingly thin and light. And best of all, it's completely waterproof.

You've probably seen rugged cases from Otterbox and the like?calling them bulky would be an understatement. The LifeProof case is only 0.43 inches thick (versus 0.37 inches for the iPhone alone) and weighs just under an ounce. It looks and feels like a normal, non-rugged case, which is definitely a plus. There are two interlocking plastic pieces, with a clear plastic screen cover built into the front. I'm not a fan of anything that gets between your finger and the glass, but for the sake of protection and waterproofing, the plastic cover is tolerable. It is prone to air bubbles and will flex to the touch, but this doesn?t affect usability. The plastic cover does, however, make the screen appear dimmer and more reflective than normal.

Otherwise, there are rubber buttons that allow you to use all the iPhone controls, while a sealable door and plug cover the 30-pin port and headphone jack. The port opening is very narrow, and anything thicker than the standard Apple cable will not fit. The headphone jack is also fairly narrow, but luckily LifeProof includes an adapter that acts as both a way to use headphones under water and extend the jack beyond the case. Rounding out the package is a microfiber cloth and replacement headphone jack plug.

Inline

Initial setup for the LifeProof is a bit more intense than your run-of-the-mill case. It's one of the few fully waterproof cases?not to be confused with water resistant?and must be water-tested before you begin using it. This is easy enough; simply assemble the case without a phone inside and fully submerge the case in water. Detailed instructions on setup and testing can be found on LifeProof's website, and I can't stress how important it is to follow these as closely as possible.

My initial water test went perfectly, and not a single drop penetrated the LifeProof's seal. There are vents for all the microphones and speakers, and I didn't notice any significant muffling on calls or when playing music through the phone's speakers. The lens opening on the back is covered in anti-reflective glass, which did not distort photos or wash out the phone's built-in flash. Touch gestures do not register when fully submerged, which is not the case's fault, but you can start the camera app up before going under and use the Volume Up button to snap photos or start video recordings.

All in all, my iPhone 4 was just as functional with the LifeProof case on, and the added bulk is fairly insignificant considering the vastly improved durability and protection. The case is unobtrusive enough to be an everyday case, and will add peace of mind for both the avid adventurer and clumsy city dweller. We haven't reviewed any comparable cases yet, but another option to keep on your radar is the forthcoming Otterbox Armor series, which tauts a waterproof enclosure and serious impact protection.?

FTC finalizes privacy settlement with Facebook

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Federal Trade Commission voted Friday to finalize its settlement with Facebook, resolving charges that the social network exposed details about users' lives without getting the required legal consent.

Facebook Inc. agreed to submit to government audits of its privacy practices every other year for the next two decades. The company also committed to getting explicit approval from users before changing the types of content it makes public.

The settlement, announced in November, is similar to agreements the FTC reached separately with Google Inc. and Myspace.

The FTC approved the settlement Friday after a public comment period. It came a day after the FTC fined Google $22.5 million to resolve allegations that Google didn't comply with the earlier settlement.

Facebook didn't admit any wrongdoing in the settlement, though CEO Mark Zuckerberg conceded in November that the company had made "high-profile mistakes" on privacy over the years.

Both Facebook and Google have vast amounts of data on their users ? Facebook through the things people share on the site, and Google through the searches and other things people do. Such information is valuable because it can be used to improve the lucrative targeted advertising pitches that both companies aim at users.

Over the years, Facebook has been pushing users to voluntary share more about themselves. That ultimately encourages users and their friends to spend more time on the site, which in turn allows Facebook to sell more ads. Although Facebook boasts that it gives users a variety of software settings so they can decide which photos, links and updates to share with whom, the company changes those options on a regular basis.

Much of the FTC's complaint against Facebook centers on a series of changes that the company made to its privacy controls in late 2009. The revisions automatically shared information and pictures about Facebook users, even if they previously programmed their privacy settings to shield the content. Among other things, people's profile pictures, lists of online friends and political views were suddenly available for the world to see, the FTC alleged.

The complaint also charges that Facebook shared its users' personal information with third-party advertisers from September 2008 through May 2010 despite several public assurances from company officials that it wasn't passing the data along for marketing purposes.

Facebook believes that happened only in limited instances, generally when users clicked on ads that appeared on their personal profile pages. Most of Facebook's users click on ads when they are on their "Wall" ? a section that highlights their friends' posts ? or while visiting someone else's profile page.

Under the settlement, Facebook must get explicit consent ? a process known as "opting in" ? before making changes that override existing privacy preferences. The company also may not make misrepresentations about the privacy or security of users' personal information ? a broad clause that led to Google's fine on Thursday.

Violations will be subject to civil penalties of up to $16,000 per day for each infringement.

The FTC approved the settlement 3-1, with one commissioner not participating. Commissioner J. Thomas Rosch dissented, as he did with the Google deal on Thursday, partly because it didn't require an admission of wrongdoing. He also worried the settlement was too vague on whether it applied to Facebook apps written by outside parties. The three commissioners who approved the deal believe it covers apps.

Facebook had no comment beyond a statement that it is pleased the settlement received final approval.

Facebook's stock gained 80 cents, or 3.8 percent, to close Friday at $21.81. The company, based in Menlo Park, Calif., began trading publicly in mid-May, after the settlement with the FTC was reached. The stock is now trading 43 percent below its initial public offering price of $38.

What does every woman want? One French bank thinks it knows the answer: Handbag insurance and a handyman hotline.

The pink-and-gold-colored "Pour Elle" bank card, part of a cut-price summer offer by Paris-based lender Societe Generale, promises to "simplify" women's lives with up to 200 euros ($250) of handbag theft insurance and a dedicated hotline for up to two electrician, locksmith or other handyman call-outs per year.

As useful as these products might be, not all women are happy to be singled out by their bank as needing special help.

"It's a little cheeky to promote both at the same time as 'female crises' that could arise," said Lys-Aelia Hart, a 24-year-old assistant art buyer living in Paris. "In my eyes, many men don't know how to deal with a serious electrical issue - on the contrary, they'd probably get killed."

A spokeswoman for SocGen said the cards had been a "great success" and said the bank did not view them as sexist. "We don't think it's a discriminatory approach," she said. "Those who choose these cards are those who wish to adhere to their femininity."

Even men aren't shy about signing up for the card, added the spokeswoman. "Five percent of cardholders are men," she said.

Despite the noble intentions, the card still looks to some like a misguided attempt to cater to women's needs. "I don't need my bank to dictate what kind of services I need, but it's kind of them to offer," said Hart.

(1)M-Mall: Mickey's Mall.
When you enter there is a big sign that says Mickey's Mall, but everyone affectionately calls it M-Mall. Inside there is a fully functional working arcade, along with many different stores such as:

  • Clarabelle Cow's Clothing: A hot fashion store for both men and woman. There you can find what ever you can only imagine. There will always be something you would like there.
  • Goofy's Gym: A gym located on the top floor of the mall, is open for anyone over the age of 15. There are all different kinds of machines, a indoor basketball court, an indoor tennis court, a squash court, and all the equipment needed. Also included is an indoor swimming pool, open 27/7.
  • Chip N' Dale's Famous Burger: Here you can always find a steaming plate of burgers and fries, the towns best!

(2)Daisy's Diner: This diner is styled in the retro 70's style with a jukebox and disco floor. There is always the smell of food coming from the kitchen, but unless someone works there, it is never served.

(3)Pluto's Pizza: Your one-stop need for all your cheesy cravings.

(4)Minnie's Merchandise: Here you can find all your grocery along with whatever you may need for your home. Its like your very own Wal-Mart! What's a Wall-Mart? hehehe...

(5)Scrooge's City Hall: Here everyone can find the announcements and what events are going to happen, once again for some reason it just randomly shows up so I suggest checking there every so often.

(6)Ludwig Von Drake's Library: In this library you can find whatever story you choose to find. Except your own of course.

(7)Pete's Pier: This is the pier leading to the beach, there is a seafood/sushi joint here along with a Ferris Wheel. Many couples come here to watch the sunset.

(8)Donald's Beach: There is beach surrounding the island but only here are there chairs and umbrellas. Also this place has the warmest sand.

(9)Huey, Dewey, and Louie's Theater: Here there is a movie theater, every day in the evening there is a movie, and on Saturday's a special double feature.

(10)Max's Hangout: This is the best place for people to hang out. Its like a club that has non-stop music and endless drinks
