Visitors also have to pay for transport ? a short train ride from London, for example, followed by a special bus service from Watford Junction, and they exit the tour through a gift shop where the most expensive item is a replica of the robes worn by Dumbledore costing 495.95 pounds ($790).

Many of the sets are cordoned off, although interactive elements include a "magic" iron moving at the wave of a wand, touchscreens helping children navigate Hogwarts and broomsticks to sit on and "fly" over digitally imposed backgrounds.

"Prices aside, the tour is a must-see for Potter fans and a fitting monument to the team who created Britain's most successful film franchise," said Anita Singh in the Telegraph.

The official website for the iPhone 4 "antennagate" class action settlement is live, as pointed out by co-lead counsel on the case Ira Rothken. Of course, speaking of cases, if you're an iPhone 4 owner who has taken advantage of the free bumpers Apple's been offering since 2010 then you're not still eligible for the $15 settlement. Customers who meet the requirements (experienced antenna issues, couldn't return your phone without incurring costs, don't want to put on a bumper or case and either completed troubleshooting or no longer own the phone) can opt for the payout and file their claim at the website linked below. Of course, assuming you're not a stickler for that skin-to-metal and glass feel the case is probably the better deal overall, but as long as this issue is finally dead and buried we can probably all walk away happy.

The Politics of Pet Dogs and Kennel Crates | Psychology Today

I was more than a little surprised to find that there is an active campaign being pursued to ban the use of kennel crates for dogs. This has resulted in a number of articles in mainstream newspapers and magazines, as well as vigorous lobbying attempts to get the use of kennel crates for dogs classified as a form of animal abuse.

There are some methods of restraining and confining dogs which have problems. Tying out dogs on chains or ropes for excessive amounts of time has been shown to have negative effects. Obviously tying a dog out for long periods without access to adequate shelter from the elements can be harmful to a dog's health. However there are also psychological problems that result from this practice, the major one being that it increases the level of aggression in dogs. The reason for this is that a dog's first response to anything that it interprets as a threat is to run away from the situation. Restraining a dog on a short tether prevents him from fleeing, and therefore, the dog self protectively chooses to attack whoever he sees as a potential danger before they get a chance to harm him. This aggressive attack behavior soon becomes habitual?a fact that has been recognized for a long time. There is even a manuscript recovered from the ruins of Pompeii which describes the procedure for turning a dog into an effective guard dog, and its major recommendation is to tether the dog on a short lead near the door of the home or other premise that needs to be protected.

Contrary to the information on the use of tie outs, I knew of no evidence suggesting that the judicious use of kennel crates can cause problems for dogs. In fact, there is a reasonable consensus among dog behaviorists which suggests that the use of a kennel crate is extremely helpful in many ways. A lot of evidence indicates that it is much easier to housebreak a puppy if ?it is taken out to eliminate before bedtime, placed in a kennel crate overnight, and then taken out again to eliminate first thing in the morning. Use of the kennel crate can also prevent destructive habits from developing, since if the dog is placed in a kennel crate when one is out of the house for short times the puppy never has the opportunity to learn about the pleasures of chewing on your furniture.

Many of the negative attitudes toward the kennel crate seem to arise from people anthropomorphizing. Obviously a human being would not like to have their freedom curtailed and to be confined to a small space. Indeed, one of the ways that was used by the North Vietnamese to attempt to psychologically break prisoners of war was to keep them in small confined cages. However dogs are not people. The major progenitor of dogs was the wolf, and wolves spend a good deal of their day in a den. Dens are simply small caves, or burrows that the wolf had dug out. These often provide just enough space for the animal to stand up and turn around. The den is viewed by these canines as a place of safety and our domestic dogs seem to have inherited that behavioral predisposition. A kennel crate can serve as an artificial den for our pet dogs and when provided with a pad or a towel to rest on, and perhaps a chew toy, it can become a place of comfort and security. Most dogs that have grown up in houses where a crate is available will tend to seek it out as their private place to calmly rest from the bustle of activity around them. For this reason I keep a kennel crate in a corner near our living room with its door propped open. At almost any time during the day I am apt to find one or another of my dogs comfortably snoozing away in the crate. When the house is invaded by our flock of small grandchildren this kennel becomes a refuge from little hands, especially since the kids have already been instructed that they are not to disturb the dog when he is in "his house."

Thinking, perhaps, that I had missed some new scientific data against the advisability of crating dogs I reviewed the current research literature on crating and found nothing negative, however I did encounter what appears to be one of the sources of this new negative attitude toward kennel crates. Apparently, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) recently began an ad campaign condemning the use of crates for dogs, under any circumstances. Thus a recent half page ad in the Wall Street Journal has the heading "Be an Angel for Animals" and goes on to say "Don't ever crate or chain them."

I therefore decided to check the PETA website to see what their arguments against crating were. Instead of finding any data I found only polemics, with statements like "No matter what a pet shop owner or dog trainer might say, a dog crate is just a box with holes in it, and putting dogs in crates is just a way to ignore and warehouse them until you get around to taking care of them properly."

As I paged through the various articles on their website, it became quite clear to me that PETA is not against the practice of crating, but it is actually against the practice of pet ownership. Thus they state "we believe that it would have been in the animals' best interests if the institution of 'pet keeping'-i.e., breeding animals to be kept and regarded as 'pets'-never existed."? They also go on to say, "This selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them causes immeasurable suffering".

The crux of their argument against pet keeping seems to be that we are "depriving them of the opportunity to engage in their natural behavior. They are restricted to human homes, where they must obey commands and can only eat, drink, and even urinate when humans allow them to." I must admit that I found this to be particularly puzzling and unsatisfying. My wife and I have raised five children, and have nine grandchildren, and when they were young they were taught to obey simple commands and requests as part of their socialization. Our children were only given the opportunity to eat and drink according to our scheduling, and certainly were not allowed to urinate anytime and anywhere that they chose during the period of their toilet training. We certainly did not feel that we were engaging in child abuse by utilizing these basic child-rearing practices. To treat a dog in much the same way that we treat our own children, including providing the love and support that they need, does not appear to me to constitute animal abuse, or an argument against the keeping of pets.

I believe that PETA really has no scientific evidence to support the complete abolishment of the use of the kennel crate. It seems to me that their actual desire for banning crating is that in so doing they would make keeping dogs in the house more difficult and the housebreaking of puppies less reliable. This advances their anti-pet agenda by taking away some of the pleasure of pet keeping and in that way it would further their programme aimed at denying us the companionship of our dogs and cats.

Unfortunately they have been having a modicum of success. Because of such misleading publicity and lobbying campaigns there are a number of venues that have passed laws against tying dogs out. This is sensible if we were dealing with tethering dogs for long periods of time, or without adequate shelter, but some of the legislation has been as extreme as the ad campaigns used by PETA which incorporate words like "don't ever". Thus here in my hometown of Vancouver, a woman was recently fined $250 because she tied her dog's leash to a bicycle rack while she ducked into a grocery store to pick up a couple of items. The dog was tied out for less than 10 minutes, and could easily be seen by its owner through the store's window. Tying a dog out for a few minutes on a shopping trip does not constitute dog abuse, but legislating against such a common practice could discourage people from having dogs since it would mean they could not take their pets with them when they move around town. This appears to be the kind of thing that PETA really wants to advance? to bring about an end to the keeping of dogs and cats as pets?not the protection of animals.

Hong Kong property tycoons muscle in on leadership poll

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Property interests dominate Hong Kong's economy and hold great sway over the scandal-hit leadership "election" taking place on Sunday, but public resentment over the influence of big business is growing in the world's most expensive housing market.

China regained control of Hong Kong from Britain in 1997, promising the financial hub full democracy as an ultimate goal, but the people still have no direct say in choosing their next leader and have threatened to take to the streets in protest on Sunday whatever the result.

Hong Kong executive Markus Shaw, the grand nephew of media and film mogul Run Run Shaw, branded the territory's economy an oligarchy, dominated by conglomerates, most with their roots in property. They have great influence over the 1,200-member election committee, which will choose a successor to the bow tie-wearing chief executive, Donald Tsang.

"You know they are basically controlling blocks of votes," Shaw told Reuters in his office where he oversees his family's wealth. "That kind of hurdle is very hard to overcome unless you are their chosen candidate."

Shaw's cynicism illustrates the skewed nature of Hong Kong's political landscape in which greater forces -- Beijing's Communist Party leaders and the city's tycoons -- are able to influence policy making for their own ends. The election committee is stacked with Beijing loyalists.

Beijing's desire for control and the tycoons' thirst for favorable land policies drown out public demands for democracy and affordable housing in what is often hailed as one of the freest and most open economies in Asia, if not the world.

"That's the dirty secret about Hong Kong, really," shareholder activist David Webb said.

Hong Kong is perennially rated the world's freest economy, thanks to low taxes and a lack of duties, but he said industries such as real estate were run by cartels.

"The fact that we keep winning the freest economy in the world is only because there aren't measures of the freedom of the domestic economy."

A series of scandals, many of them real-estate related, has stirred public anger about the tight link between property tycoons and Hong Kong's leaders.

One candidate in Sunday's election, Henry Tang, until recently believed to have Beijing's blessing, has been rocked by revelations of a 2,400-sq ft illegal basement below a family mansion, bigger than most people's homes in the densely populated city.

'COZY RELATIONSHIP'

Outgoing leader Tsang has been criticized for accepting advantages from property tycoons, mingling with the ultra-rich on private yachts and jets, and renting a 6,000-sq ft apartment in southern China at favorable rates.

"There's always been this cozy relationship between the tycoon community and politicians," Peter Churchouse, a property investor who runs the family office Portwood Capital, said. "The tycoons have ridden roughshod over the public and public opinion."

Many tycoons sit on the election committee, including Li Ka-shing, Asia's richest man and founder of Cheung Kong (Holdings); Thomas Kwok Ping-kwong, one of the brothers running Sun Hung Kai Properties, Asia's largest developer by market value; and Lee Shau-kee, the leader of Henderson Land.

The three families control swathes of votes among the 1,193 election committee members through interests in n industries like hotels and transport, such as Sun Hung Kai subsidiary Kowloon Motor Bus, independent observers like Webb say. Unlike Markus Shaw, who did not make it onto the election committee, all of the 18 people representing the property industry were uncontested appointees to the committee.

Sun Hung Kai, Cheung Kong and Henderson Land dominate the market for residential real estate. They will provide 54 percent of the 20,398 private housing units expected to be launched in the city in 2012, Barclays Capital estimates.

Land premiums made up 17.4 percent of government revenue in the 2010-2011 financial year, or HK$65.5 billion ($8.4 billion). Stamp duty from property sales made up another 6.5 percent of collections. That means 24 percent of the money the government raised came from property deals.

Current Hong Kong "chief executive" Tsang got into hot water after newspapers got wind of a private jet trip to the Thai resort island of Phuket on a private jet that local media have said is owned by Cheung Chung-kiu, a billionaire dubbed the "Li Ka-shing of Chongqing" and chairman of the developer CC Land.

Tsang also cruised back from Macau aboard a $19 million yacht owned by a company linked to billionaire tycoon Thomas Lau, the South China Morning Post reported. Lau, who will vote on Sunday, is the brother of Joseph Lau, one of Hong Kong's best-known developers who runs Chinese Estates Holdings.

"Until recently, crony capitalism was a conspiracy theory," Shaw said. "Now with what's happened with Donald Tsang and his relationship with these businessmen, the conspiracy theory has been revealed to be true."

Shaw says he will also take to the streets if Tang, the candidate favored by big business and explicitly backed by the likes of Li Ka-shing, is elected. Tang's main opponent, Leung Chun-ying, left the property brokerage firm DTZ to run, and faces a legislative probe over a conflict of interest construction scandal.

'ROOT AND BRANCH CHANGE NEEDED'

"I would march. I think a lot of establishment figures would march," Shaw said. "It will be suicidal to support a candidate that has no support of the public." [ID:nL3E8EL0ZL].

Christine Loh, co-founder of the think tank Civic Exchange, believes Hong Kong's dependence on land sales has created a "political economy of land" the next leader needs to address.

"There's a sense of entitlement to certain things -- that is what gets the man in the street," Loh said. "It isn't just the individuals that come together. The system binds them together. That is the change that is most difficult. You need a root and branch change."

Vested interests in property run extremely deep. With little social security, anybody who owns a home is desperate to see house prices supported. Hong Kong's first post-colonial leader, shipping tycoon Tung Chee-hwa, stepped down mid-office after an estimated half a million people took to the streets in 2003, including those suffering negative equity after a property bubble burst.

The dominance of the leading developers is partly the result of a high capital threshold to bid for the most lucrative land sites. The likes of Churchouse say it costs HK$1 billion (US$128 million) to "get into the game" in major land auctions, excluding all but the biggest developers.

As for Sunday's election, Hong Kong's next leader may not be the person the property tycoons want, unlike Tung Chee-hwa and the incumbent Tsang.

While the public has no vote, critical media coverage of Tang and the threat of mass protests have now seemingly shifted Beijing's allegiance to Leung, whom many developers oppose given his advocacy of more land being allocated for cheap public housing.

"They thought that Henry Tang was their man," said Paul Zimmerman, an architect and advocate for improved urban development. "Now they are finding out

The Notorious B.I.G. had plenty of hit singles, like "Big Poppa" and "Hypnotize," but more often than not, his album cuts were just as memorable. He may have only given fans two albums before he died on March 9, 1997, but Biggie crafted a catalog that is still celebrated 15 years after his death. Songs like "Gimme the Loot" and "Ten Crack Commandments" resonated with fans without music videos or radio play.

Till this day, one of Lil' Cease's favorite B.I.G. songs is "Everyday Struggle," from Big's 1994 debut, Ready to Die. "I'm sure I was about 13,14," Cease said, recalling his age when his friend first tracked the record. "I was too young to understand everything in it, but I understood everything in it."

On "Everyday Struggle," the Notorious B.I.G. rapped with a hustler's remorse. Rather than brag about his crack sales, like rappers often do, Big painted a picture of the downside of the street life. He rhymed about his mother's disappointment with his lifestyle, the murder of his close friend "Two Techs" and horrific dope-fiend binges.

"I don't wanna live no mo'/ Sometimes I hear death knockin' at my front door/ I'm living every day like a hustle, another drug to juggle/ Another day, another struggle," he rapped on the hook.

"Just that right there was our story. I was out there 11, 12 years old trying to do that, trying to hustle, trying to get out there and make money," Cease said.
