New Mexico Philharmonic meshes classical music, electronics

The New Mexico Philharmonic will launch its series of PULSE concerts in February. They are aimed at drawing a younger audience, and meshing classical music with modern electronic sounds.

Many classical music groups around the country have been tracking with alarm the steadily rising average age of classical music devotees.

The Philharmonic was created from the ashes of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra. Executive Director Marian Tanau said his plans include many such collaborations.

The inaugural concert of the new series takes place Feb. 12 at the KiMo Theatre? ? Mellits has a musical style that combines driving rhythms and colorful orchestration. His work has been performed by major ensembles around the country, such as the Kronos Quartet and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
